Why Drivers Love the 2024 Chevy Traverse

The engineers at Chevy were given a difficult task: How do you make a great model like the Traverse even better? What can you do to make drivers fall in love with the Traverse more than they already have? Since it first appeared at Chevrolet dealers in 2009, the Traverse has been one of Chevy’s most popular SUVs, giving drivers three rows for up to eight passengers.

Before the Chevy Traverse, you had to choose between two full-size models—the Tahoe and Suburban—if you wanted that much seating capacity. However, many drivers—such as families and commuters—don’t want a model that big, so the Traverse was designed to fill that niche. Now, with the 2024 Chevy Traverse, you can get so many reasons to love this wonderful three-row midsize SUV.

Looks Worth Loving

The Traverse already had attractive looks before the introduction of the third generation with the 2024 model. However, now the Traverse has a broader, more aggressive stance. As Chevrolet’s Vice President points out, “Our new Traverse is designed and engineered to act and look more like an SUV.” This wider frame actually gives the Traverse a familial resemblance to the larger Chevy Tahoe. At the same time, it also kind of looks like a larger version of the 2024 Chevy Trax, making a connection between these different Chevy SUV models.

Even though the 2024 Traverse looks more rugged than the second-generation models, it still has the refinements and elements of interior design that you know and love. Phil Zak, the executive design director of Global Chevrolet, notes that “the bold exterior of the all-new Traverse helps redefine its role and capability for customers. It is as versatile as ever, but with an increased focus on capability that reflects the spirit of its owners.”

You can see this with the interior. For example, you can still seat up to eight passengers in the three rows of most Traverse models. A few of the upper trims offer captain’s chairs in the second row (in place of a bench seat) that will provide room for seven passengers instead. In addition, the Traverse offers up to 98 cu.ft. of cargo space behind the driver’s seat, so you will able to carry large loads with your SUV.

An All-New Powertrain

Chevy has also improved the performance of the 2024 Traverse, but it has done it in an interesting way. Where the prior year’s model featured a standard 3.6-liter V6 gas engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission, the third generation went with a smaller engine. This is a 2.5-liter Turbo I-4 gas engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Conventional wisdom would hold that a smaller engine would reduce the power and performance of a vehicle, especially if its relative size and gross vehicle weight remain fairly constant. However, in this case, conventional wisdom would be wrong.

The 2.5-liter Turbo I-4 on the 2024 Traverse delivers 328 hp and 326 lb-ft of torque. Both of these are more than you would get from the 3.6-liter V6 on the 2023 model, which tops out at 310 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. This is why you should see better acceleration while still being able to tow up to 5,000 lbs with your new Traverse.

17.7-Inches of Infotainment

The 2024 Chevy Traverse comes equipped with a 17.7-inch color touchscreen for its infotainment system. This is the largest touchscreen on any midsize SUV in the Traverse’s class, and it’s more than double the size of the standard 7.0-inch touchscreen that came on the 2023 Traverse or even the available 8.0-inch screen on that model.

Drivers will be able to make hands-free calls using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This also allows you to stream your favorite music or other entertainment features. If you use it for navigation, your maps and directions will appear larger, making them easier to read. The infotainment system also helps you and your passengers stay connected with an available Wi-Fi hotspot, while the six USB ports will let everyone keep their devices charged throughout the ride.

More Driver Assistance Features Standard

The 2023 Traverse features the standard six driver assistance features of the Chevy Safety Assist technologies. This includes key items like Automatic Emergency Braking, which will engage the brakes if the system detects an imminent collision, and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, which uses slight steering adjustments to keep your Traverse from drifting into another lane.

For 2024, Chevy has equipped the Traverse with these six standard features, as well as 14 additional standard safety and driver assistance features. For example, Reverse Automatic Braking will work similarly to Automatic Emergency Braking. However, where Automatic Emergency Braking engages the emergency brakes for potential front-end collisions, Reverse Automatic Braking will help you avoid a collision when you are backing out of a space or your driveway. If the system detects a vehicle, bicyclist, or pedestrian about to cross behind your Traverse, it will automatically engage the brakes so you can avoid an accident. The system will also send you an alert through Rear Pedestrian Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, both of which are also standard. This is helpful since there are times when you may not see other vehicles with the Traverse’s HD Rear Vision Camera.

One of the most common causes of collisions on the highway is when you go to change lanes. The other motorist in the adjacent lane may be riding in your vehicle’s blind spot, and you don’t know they are there until it is too late. With the standard Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, the system will let you know if there is a vehicle riding in the lane next to you when you signal to change lanes. It will even work for someone riding a bicycle with Side Bicyclist Alert. The system on the Traverse goes beyond just letting you know of a potential collision, as Blind Zone Steering Assist will work to give a slight adjustment to your steering wheel to help you avoid a crash with a vehicle in the adjacent lane, much like the standard Lane Keep Assist feature.

With 20 different standard driver assistance features, the 2024 Traverse may prove to be one of the safest models in its class. This shows that Chevy wants to help protect you and the people you love.

The New Z71 Off-Road Trim

If you’re a fan of the Chevy Silverado lineup, then you are probably familiar with the Z71 name. This is a package available on the Silverado 1500 that gives you features you need if you want to take your truck off-roading.

With this in mind, Chevy introduces an all-new trim of the Traverse, the Z71. This takes the rugged good looks of the 2024 Traverse and adds features and capabilities to match. It starts with a standard all-wheel drivetrain with a twin-clutch system. This optimizes traction by delivering the right amount of power to each of the Traverse Z71’s wheels. Each of these 18-inch wheels comes wrapped with all-terrain tires to give you a better grip on and off the road. Meanwhile, the Z71 gets an added inch of ground clearance, as well as a wider track width for better overall vehicle stability.

Chevy has added a set of skid plates to the Z71 to shield its vital undercarriage. This gives you the peace of mind that you can safely traverse most obstacles in your path. There is even an aluminum skid plate under the front end to provide added protection, as well as a pair of red tow hooks for use if you need to help get someone stuck in the mud.

The Traverse Z71 has a set of drive modes that allow you to choose the right amount of traction depending on off-road conditions. The suspension system has unique off-road dampers with hydraulic rebound control that are designed to help your Z71 when out on the trail.
